Here at Fund Board Views, we value our long-term relationships with the folks who sit on mutual fund boards and otherwise work in the fund governance space. It's actually the best part of my job! And when one of them reaches the point of embarking on something new, we love to be able to highlight their accomplishments and send them off with our very best wishes. Recently, we had the opportunity to do this with Dan Steiner, who spent a quarter-century at ICI Mutual after years in private practice in the investment management and professional liability insurance space. Before retiring last week, Steiner shared some reflections on his long career, thoughts on the industry, and plans for the future. Make time to read this Q&A.

In other news, we've recently offered a look inside the boardrooms of Manning & Napier Funds and Hennessy Funds. Each of these boards has welcomed a new independent director, and we spoke to individuals at those boards about the "why" behind the selections and the process of finding the right person to fill the seat around the table. This extra perspective provides readers with insight into how decisions are being made, information that can be useful when another board finds itself at the start of a recruitment effort and/or facing other everyday challenges. It's what sets FBV apart.

Finally, don't miss our latest Viewpoints. Sullivan & Worcester's Nicole Crum and Weber Shandwick's Keisha McClellan tackle mutual fund boards' oversight obligations with respect to cybersecurity, in the context of the SEC's latest cybersecurity rulemaking efforts. It's an intelligent, informative piece on a subject that has a firm footing atop boards' agendas these days. Read it, and share it—our contributed Viewpoints articles are not behind the FBV paywall so the link will be accessible to anyone who clicks on it.

Here's hoping you had an enjoyable three-day weekend celebrating Juneteenth. Today is the last day of spring, and our annual Summer Reading List comes out tomorrow, the (official) start of Summer 2023. Please send your reading recommendations (fiction, non-fiction, self-help, finance-related, etc.) my way, to hillary.jackson@fundboardviews.com. We especially love to include books written by directors, industry lawyers, and others in the fund governance space. Hope to hear from you by day's end!

For now,
