SEC analyzes July 8 NYSE trading suspension

February 3, 2016

By Securities and Exchange Commission

The Securities and Exchange Commission has published a research paper on the July 8 market event that involved a suspension of trading by the New York Stock Exchange. The analysis provides an assessment of trading before, during, and after the NYSE trading suspension, and the research found that trading activity in NYSE-listed stocks appeared to have migrated during the NYSE suspension to other trading venues, particularly other exchanges. It found that on average, quoted spreads on other exchanges increased for NYSE-listed stocks, especially for smaller and less frequently traded stocks and that average quoted inside depths decreased for NYSE-listed stocks, especially for larger stocks.
